MOOC Driven Learning Cultures


Think back to the very first online course you signed up for – what did you hope to get from it?  Some knowledge?  A new perspective perhaps? A certificate that you could print out and put on the wall or add to your resume?

Now, think about the last course that you signed up for – have your reasons changed? Once upon a time, it was JUST about gaining new knowledge and skills….

Today, not so much. Thanks in part to social media it’s about the connections made in your courses. The people you want to stay connected to via  Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn.  It’s in the creation of global contacts that can provide you with cultural and market insight into various issues and concepts.  It’s about communicating with the outside world – often about the class or ideas that came out of work someone did for the class.  There is more back and forth dialogue.  We create a culture of connections.

Connections build the community…the course community is generally hosted in the forums.  We ask questions, give answers sometimes, and opinions almost always.  We challenge.  We support.  We bond. We build teams.  We find leaders. We find ways to make even the weakest link stronger. We find new resources. We find new ideas.  We make time to converse with each other.  We create a culture of sharing.

Sharing ideas, questions, information, concepts – even real world problems to find a course based solution.   We draw people into the conversation, and out of themselves.  We accept that some will learn by active discussion, others by reading along. We make everyone have an equal voice.  We learn – not just “book knowledge”, but deeper learning – in the evaluation of ideas and answers.  We think.  We explore. We express.  We share. We debate. We rethink.  We create a culture of deeper learning.
